Aamir Khan in ‘Dangal’: How a Major Bollywood Star Uses Cinema to Raise Awareness

19 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Call Aamir Khan a perfectionist, and he’ll lightheartedly brush off the label, preferring to describe himself as simply “passionate” instead. Terminology aside, a mere glance at his 28-year career is ample proof that for Khan, going the extra mile is practically the equivalent of slacking off—the 51-year-old actor, producer, and director usually travels another 10 for good measure.

He did it in 1998’s “Ghulam,” when he turned down a body double or special effects in favor of sprinting towards an oncoming train for a stunt, avoiding it by a mere second and gambling his life for the sake of realism.

In 1999, when a script about 19th century villagers protesting British land tax with a game of cricket was dismissed by every financier in Bollywood, Khan took on his first producing role alongside his acting credit to make the film. Three years of grueling production later, “Lagaan” became the third »

Allied, swathed in larger-than-life, luxurious imposture, is the real heart-racing deal.
    70
    Village Voice Bilge Ebiri

Allied doesn’t deliver any particularly shocking twists or turns; the real surprise here is how much a well-told, well-acted tale can still resonate.
    63
    Slant Magazine Jake Cole

In the film, Robert Zemeckis brings to bear his pop-epic scope in what’s otherwise a claustrophobic story.
    60
    Screen International Tim Grierson

A World War II romance-thriller that starts off smartly but sputters to an underwhelming finale.
    58
    Indiewire Kate Erbland

Allied can never settle on a consistent tone, bumping along from smooth spy adventure to stylized war picture to treatise on marriage, all peppered with stilted attempts at humor for an added dash of incomprehensibility.
    50
    The Playlist Oliver Lyttelton

It’s an engaging film in many respects, but one that exemplifies a lot of the problems that have trailed Zemeckis across his career.
    40
    Empire Phil de Semlyen

Zemeckis’ old-school romance has its moments and Cotillard gives it her all, but it lacks the zip and chemistry to truly spark.
    40
    TheWrap Robert Abele

Allied is ultimately a thin love story, with creaky suspense machinery and star turns from Pitt and Cotillard that feel more like matinee idol dress-up than a meeting of the magnetic.
    40
    The Guardian Peter Bradshaw

Director Robert Zemeckis is usually known for his zestiness and zippiness; but this is arduous. Screenwriter Steven Knight scripted smart movies such as Locke, Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises, and there are some nice touches, but it resembles an unconvincing and sluggish pastiche of a war movie.
    40
    The Hollywood Reporter David Rooney

Plodding and pedestrian even in the technical magic that is a Zemeckis trademark, this is a case of a director out of his element with a script that fails to generate much heat.

  • Box Office: ‘Moana’ Gobbles Up $9.9 Million to Win Thanksgiving Day

    25 November 2016 | Variety – Film News | See recent Variety – Film News news »

Disney’s animated Polynesian adventure “Moana” led U.S. moviegoing on Thanksgiving Day with $9.9 million at 3,875 locations as it heads towards the $85 million to $90 million range during the five-day holiday break.

Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” finished a close second with $9.6 million at 4,144 sites on Thanksgiving, pushing the Harry Potter spinoff to $110 million in its first seven days.

But three other wide-release openers aimed at adults found only moderate traction on Thanksgiving with Brad Pitt’s “Allied” grossing $2.3 million, Billy Bob Thornton’s “Bad Santa 2” with $1.4 million and Warren Beatty’s “Rules Don’t Apply” nearly invisible with $285,000.

    Second Opinion – Allied (2016)

    Allied, 2016.

    Directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Starring Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, Jared Harris, Lizzy Caplan, and Matthew Goode.

    Synopsis:

In 1942, an intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war.

Allied is a remarkable film from the always reliable veteran director Robert Zemeckis (the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Castaway, last year’s disappointingly overlooked and underappreciated The Walk) that essentially feels like three movies in one, thanks to the filmmaker’s efficiency at switching up the tone throughout each act. Allied is 1/3rd espionage action, 1/3rd World War II era romance, 1/3rd relationship trust thriller, and 100% riveting.

Each of the tones come and go gracefully as Zemeckis  tells a captivating story regarding a Canadian intelligence officer falling in love with a French Resistance »

Box Office: Disney’s ‘Moana’ Tops Thanksgiving Eve Ticket Sales With $15.7 Million

Disney’s “Moana” topped the Thanksgiving eve box office, picking up $15.7 million in its first full day of release, and leaving the competition in its wake.

The animated adventure is tracking closely to “Frozen,” which picked up $15.2 million over the same holiday period in 2013, ultimately making $93.4 million over the five day festivities. “Moana,” which follows a girl in the Pacific islands who embarks on an oceanic journey to save her people, is on pace to debut to more than $80 million over the five-day Thanksgiving corridor. Disney didn’t release a budget for “Moana,” but most animated films from the studio run between $150 million to $200 million.

At its core, Allied may be a WWII thriller revolving around themes of espionage, subterfuge and flat-out mutiny, but to trumpet the movie’s release, Paramount Pictures has blown the lid off Robert Zemeckis’ starry thriller with a hoard of clips, TV spots and high-res stills showcasing the film’s leading cast.

At the forefront of that ensemble are Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, who headline Allied as Max Vatan and Marianne Beausejour, a French Resistance fighter, respectively. Assigned to a top-secret mission in North Africa – Casablanca, to be exact – during the throes of World War II, Pitt and Cotillard’s duelling spies strike up an intense romance behind enemy lines.

Their seemingly perfect relationship is put to the sword, however, upon reuniting in London, where accusations are levelled against Cotillard’s Marianne for double-crossing. There are many more story details scattered throughout the deluge of TV spots and clips below, »

Watch a Pair of Early Short Films From Robert Zemeckis

It’s strange to use the word “under-appreciated” when it comes to the director behind such hits as Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Contact, Cast Away, and Forrest Gump, but in today’s Hollywood it feels like Robert Zemeckis‘ talents are often overlooked. His eye for composition and structure scene-by-scene is remarkable in his recent return to live-action and certainly the case when it comes to his Allied, which is more entertaining than most of its awards-fare brethren.

With the release of his World War II thriller, it’s time to take a look back at his early directorial eye when he was at USC with two short films. The first is 1972’s The Lift, featuring black-and-white photography and a jazzy score as we follow a man’s bout with machinery. Box Office: ‘Moana’ Heads for Heroic $88 Million Thanksgiving Weekend Opening

Disney’s animated adventure “Moana” is dominating North American moviegoing with as much as $88 million for the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period, early estimates showed Wednesday.

Brad Pitt’s “Allied” appears to be performing respectably with around $19 million for the five days while Billy Bob Thornton’s “Bad Santa 2” is heading for a decent return in the $12 million range. Meanwhile, Warren Beatty’s “Rules Don’t Apply” is generating only modest interest with about $5 million for the holiday period.

Moana” opened with plenty of box office power by taking in $2.6 million at Tuesday night preview showings starting at 7 p.m. in North America. That doubled the $1.3 million Tuesday preview record set last year by Disney’s “The Good Dinosaur.” These latest estimates blow past earlier predictions that had the film opening in the $75 million range.

Scripted by the brilliant Steven Knight and directed by Robert Zemeckis, Allied is a throwback to Hollywood’s golden age. Glamourous stars sizzle onscreen in a big budget period piece. The film is equal parts romance and thriller. It succeeds much more often than it fails. A few tweaks could have made Allied a classic. It doesn’t quite get there, but is definitely captivating. Marion Cotillard absolutely towers over this film. Brad Pitt is able, but his sensual co-star smolders.

In 1942, a Canadian soldier, Max Vatan (Brad Pitt), clandestinely parachutes into Nazi held Morocco. He’s on a secret mission to rendezvous with a French resistance agent, Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard). The pair must play a married couple, reunited after months apart. The heightened danger leads to a titillating romance between the spies. They fall madly in love. But is it real? Seduction and deception are the keys to espionage. All may »

How Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard Became the Most Glamorous WWII Spies Ever: All the Scoop from Allied’s Costume Designer

With lead actors as attractive as Marion Cotillard and Brad Pitt, Allied costume designer Joanna Johnston says “you could put them in a brown paper bag and they would look amazing.”

But when it came time to design their costumes for the new WWII spy thriller Allied, Johnston tells People she was inspired by the classics. “The inspiration really was old-fashioned Hollywood — films were slightly lifted during that time. There was quite a glamour aspect to it, rather than it being sort of war-torn.”

The film itself owes more to classics like Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon than it does »

Box Office: Disney’s ‘Moana’ Sets Sail With Record-Breaking $2.6 Million on Tuesday

23 November 2016 7:18 AM, PST | Variety – Film News | See recent Variety – Film News news »

Kicking off the Thanksgiving holiday break with gusto, Disney’s animated adventure “Moana” opened with plenty of box office power and took in $2.6 million at Tuesday night preview showings starting at 7 p.m. in North America.

The “Moana” gross doubled the $1.3 million Tuesday preview record set last year by Disney’s “The Good Dinosaur.” It’s also far above the $1.2 million preview gross from “Frozen,” the $1.4 million Thursday preview total for “Big Hero 6” and the $1.7 million Thursday preview for “Zootopia” in March.

Moana” is expected to easily top the holdover numbers for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday along with the openings for Brad Pitt’s thriller “Allied,” Billy Bob Thornton’s raucous comedy “Bad Santa 2” and Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes comedy-drama “Rules Don’t Apply.”

Allied is somewhat of a rare thing these days – a Robert Zemeckis film that functions almost entirely without the aid of crucial CGI. Indeed, in the years since 2000’s Cast Away, only the director’s 2012 airline drama Flight veered away from computer generated actors and green screen-heavy environments (despite the odd blockbuster effects sequence). This World War II suspense drama, then, is about as old-fashioned Hollywood as Zemeckis has ever been, drawing on classics like Casablanca and running the gamut of Hitchcock-inspired suspense. Alliedcertainly looks the part. The impeccable wartime costume design, breathtaking Moroccan vistas and explosive skies of Blitzkrieg-era London add up to a fabulous period aesthetic; throughout, Allied is a sumptuous feast for the eyes and should prove a visual thrill for any WWII fanatic. However, despite conducting affairs at a fairly thrilling pace, Zemeckis fails to produce a genuinely compelling story. Allied gets by on pure aesthetic, »

“It’s still the same old story…”, but told it a new way. That old story being one of a couple that finds romance during wartime. In the case of this new film, that time is the early 1940’s, soon after the Us entered World War II. There have been lots of great romances set in that period, such as The English Patient and, of course, Casablanca. As a matter of fact, this new film begins in that exact locale. But while other movies would do the final fade-out with its stars driving off into the desert (usually toward the setting sun), this tale’s drama is just starting. That drama is when two people from different worlds are united by a global threat, then soon become more than a couple Allied by war.

The aforementioned desert fills the screen in the film’s opening shot. French Morocco’s hills »

Dhaakad Dangal Movie Song Lyrics

Nikkar aur T-shirt pahan ke aaya cyclone
Re nikkar aur T-shirt pahan ke aaya cyclone
Laga ke phone bata de
Sabko bachke rahiyo bagad billi se
Chandigarh se ya Delhi se

Tanne charo khane chitt kar degi
Tere purje fit kar degi
Dat kar degi tere daanv se badh ke
Pench palat kar degi
Chitt kar degi, chitt kar degi

Aisi dhaakad hai dhakad hai
Aisi dhaakad hai
Aisi dhaakad hai dhakad hai
Aisi dhaakad hai (x2)

Re choriyan.. yeh choriyan

Teri akkad ki rassi jal jayegi
Pakad mein iski aag hai
Yo inchi tape se napegi
Teri kitni unchi naak hai
Teri saasein atak jayegi
Wo zor patak jayegi

Tanne charo khane chitt kar degi
Tere purje fit kar degi
Dat kar degi tere daanv se badh ke
Pench palat kar degi
Chit kar degi, chit kar degi

Aisi dhakad hai dhaakad hai
Aisi dhakad hai
Aisi dhakad hai dhaakad hai
Aisi dhakad hai (x2)

Speed superfast badi
Chori zabbar jaat badi
Bandha isne joote ka jo pheeta
Phir Geeta bani cheetah isse pehle ki
Papita girre jhaad se
Ye dahaad se pachhad gayi
Jo bhi tha ukhadna ukhaad gayi

Jitne time mein tu dekh paaye
Palkein jhapak kar
Lapak kar nikal jaayegi
Rifle ki bullet ko bhi takkar de jayegi

WWE Smackdown 22 November 2016 Highlights

0

Here are your quick and dirty, editorial-free WWE Smackdown Live results for November 22, 2016.

Survivor Series is in the rearview mirror, and Tuesday’s episode crowned a new set of No. 1 contenders for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship.

Be back here tomorrow for the full Best and Worst of Smackdown column.

WWE Smackdown Live Results:

— Shane McMahon opened the show and said he feels like he’s been in a car wreck after Survivor Series. He gave props to Team Raw and thanked Team Smackdown, especially Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt, for getting Smackdown the big win.

Dean Ambrose came out and said they should be celebrating. Shane called him out for teaming up with his Shield brethren, but Ambrose changed the topic by bringing out James Ellsworth, who entered in a neck brace.

They surprised Ellsworth by offering him an official Smackdown Live contract. Shane also gave Dean the night off and told him to leave the building, because he’s been out of control as of late. As Dean left, AJ Styles entered.

Styles said Ellsworth hasn’t earned anything, and he challenged him to a ladder match for his contract. Ellsworth accepted, and said if he wins, he also wants a future shot at the WWE title. Shane made it official for tonight.

1. Intercontinental Championship Match: The Miz (c) defeated Kalisto. Baron Corbin tried to interfere in the match. Kalisto fought him off, but the opening allowed Miz to hit the Skull Crushing Finale and get the pin.

— After the match, Corbin hit Kalisto with End of Days while The Miz and Maryse applauded from the top of the ramp. Dolph Ziggler appeared behind Miz and superkicked him.

2. Tag Team Turmoil Match: American Alpha defeated The Ascension, The Hype Bros, Breezango, The Vaudevillains, and The Usos. This was a gauntlet match to crown new No. 1 contenders for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship.

The Ascension and The Hype Bros started out and the Hype Bros eliminated the Ascension. Then Breezango came in and eliminated Hype Bros with a combination slingshot elbow drop/lungblower. American Alpha was next and countered Breezango’s finishers into a Chad Gable roll-up.

American Alpha then hit a combination dropkick/German suplex to eliminate The Vaudevillains in mere seconds. The Usos were the final team and took their time coming to the ring. American Alpha managed to win the gauntlet with Grand Amplitude.

— After the match, the Wyatt Family appeared on the screen and addressed American Alpha. Bray Wyatt said they haven’t faced all the tag teams yet, and Randy Orton said they’re not just a team, they’re a family. Bray told American Alpha to catch their breath for tonight, because he and Orton are coming for them next week.

3. Becky Lynch defeated Natalya. Alexa Bliss sat in on commentary for this match. Becky forced Natalya to tap out to the Disarmer. Alexa attacked Becky after the match.

4. Baron Corbin defeated Kane. Kalisto attacked Corbin mid-match, causing the referee to ring the bell for the disqualification.

— After the match, Kane chokeslammed Corbin. Kalisto stood over Corbin, then tried to use a chair on him, but Corbin evaded it. Kalisto threw the chair to Corbin and gave him a Van Daminator, and Corbin took a powder. Kalisto stood in the ring with the chair and dared him to fight.

5. Ladder Match: James Ellsworth defeated AJ Styles. Ambrose showed up to help Ellsworth, but Styles took him out with a Phenomenal Forearm. Ellsworth toppled the ladder as Styles was climbing, then hit No Chin Music and Styles got caught in the rope, allowing Ellsworth to grab the contract and earn a title shot

WWE Monday Night Raw 21 November 2016

0

Here are your quick and dirty, editorial-free WWE Raw results for November 21, 2016. Monday’s show featured all the fallout from Sunday’s Survivor Series pay-per-view, including a tag team title match and another appearance from Goldberg, who is not actually one-and-done after all.

Be back here tomorrow for the full Best and Worst of Raw column.

WWE Raw Results:

— The show opened with Goldberg making his entrance to the ring and cutting a promo. He thanked the fans and his family for their support. He did what he said he was going to do, and he thought all good things must come to an end, but on his way to the back on Sunday night, Stephanie McMahon asked him if he had one last title run left in him. He said you bet your ass I do, and she told him the road to the title runs through the Royal Rumble. He announced he would be in the Royal Rumble, and everyone is next.

1. WWE Raw Tag Team Championship Match: The New Day (c) defeated Cesaro and Sheamus. Cesaro had the Sharpshooter locked in on Kofi Kingston, but Xavier Woods hopped up on the apron and distracted the referee just as Kofi tapped. When the referee turned back around, Kofi rolled up Cesaro for the three-count.

2. Cedric Alexander defeated Ariya Daivari. Alexander won by pinfall after the Lumbar Check.

— Chris Jericho hosted the Highlight Reel, with Kevin Owens as his guest. The two argued about whether they were still best friends after Owens used the list to attack AJ Styles and get disqualified at Survivor Series. Eventually they both agreed that it was Roman Reigns’ fault they were eliminated and agreed to still be best friends. They started running down Reigns and Seth Rollins when Rollins’ music hit and he came out. He demanded his match against Owens for the Universal Championship tonight. The three began brawling, and then Reigns came out to even the odds. Mick Foley came out and made a No DQ match between Rollins and Owens for the Universal Championship, with Jericho and Reigns banned from ringside.

3. Rusev defeated Enzo Amore. Rusev forced Enzo to tap out to the Accolade. Rusev and Big Cass stared each other down after the match.

4. The Club defeated Golden Truth. This was for a shot at The New Day’s tag titles next week. Luke Gallows pinned Goldust after the Magic Killer.

5. Braun Strowman defeated Sami Zayn. Mick Foley had put Zayn in this match as punishment for losing at Survivor Series. Strowman jumped Zayn before the bell and mauled him so severely that Foley had to come out to order the referee to stop the match and award the decision to Braun.

— Charlotte and Dana Brooke came to the ring. Charlotte talked about how she’s the greatest athlete of all time and is above all the other women in WWE. Sasha Banks interrupted her promo and demanded her title rematch. Nia Jax then came out and called out Sasha, calling her overrated. Nia and Charlotte attacked Sasha until Bayley made the save.

6. Sasha Banks and Bayley defeated Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax. Sasha managed to get Charlotte to tap out to the Banks Statement.

7. Triple Threat Match: Rich Swann defeated TJ Perkins and Noam Dar. This match was to determine who will face Brian Kendrick for the Cruiserweight Championship next week. Kendrick sat in on commentary for this one. Swann won with the Swann Kick to TJP for the pin.

8. No Disqualification Match for the WWE Universal Championship: Kevin Owens (c) defeated Seth Rollins. Even though he was banned from ringside, Chris Jericho showed up in the crowd in a Sin Cara mask and started fighting with Rollins. That allowed Owens the opening he needed to hit an apron powerbomb and pin Rollins.

Bayley eliminated Becky Lynch with a Bayley-to-Belly to win the match for Team Raw. Bayley and Charlotte are the survivors. After the match, Charlotte attacked Bayley.

2. Intercontinental Championship Match: The Miz (c) defeated Sami Zayn. If Zayn won, he would’ve brought the Intercontinental Championship to Raw. Zayn appeared to have Miz beaten with a figure-four, but Maryse rang the bell, causing him to let go of the hold. Miz won with a roll-up.

3. Survivor Series Elimination Match: Team Raw (Enzo Amore and Big Cass, The Shining Stars, The Club, Sheamus and Cesaro and The New Day) defeated Team Smackdown (Heath Slater and Rhyno, Breezango, The Usos, The Hype Bros and American Alpha). Fandango was eliminated almost immediately with the Midnight Hour, eliminating Breezango. Jimmy Uso responded with a superkick to pin Kofi Kingston immediately, eliminating New Day. The Club pinned Zack Ryder after a Magic Killer, eliminating the Hype Bros. The Shining Stars were eliminated by American Alpha after a doomsday bulldog. American Alpha was eliminated after a Magic Killer from The Club. Rhyno gored Gallows, eliminating the Club. Enzo Amore hit a splash on Rhyno to eliminate Rhyno and Slater. Jey Uso eliminated Enzo Amore. Cesaro won the match for Team Raw with a Sharpshooter.

4. Cruiserweight Championship Match: Brian Kendrick (c) defeated Kalisto by disqualification. Kendrick won by DQ when Baron Corbin interfered.

5. Survivor Series Elimination Match: Team Smackdown (AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Shane McMahon, Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt) defeated Team Raw (Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Braun Strowman, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns). Ambrose was eliminated after brawling with AJ Styles and getting powerslammed by Braun Strowman. Strowman was eliminated following a top rope elbow through the announce table from Shane McMahon, when he couldn’t answer the count. James Ellsworth cheated to keep Strowman from getting back in, so Strowman tossed him off the stage through a table. Owens was eliminated by disqualification for attacking Styles with Chris Jericho’s list. Orton eliminated Jericho with an RKO. Roman Reigns countered a Shane McMahon coast-to-coast dropkick with a spear, but didn’t get a pin. Shane was knocked out though and eliminated, and had to be carried to the back. Ambrose returned to attack Styles, who was eliminated after a triple team Shield powerbomb through one of the remaining announce tables. Rollins was eliminated after an RKO from Orton. Reigns tried to spear Wyatt, but Orton pushed Wyatt out of the way and took it instead. Wyatt hit Sister Abigail to pin Reigns and win the match for Team Smackdown. Orton and Wyatt were the survivors.

6. Goldberg defeated Brock Lesnar. Goldberg surprised a gloating Lesnar with two spears and a Jackhammer for the pinfall victory.

50 The New Yorker | Richard Brody
Only Hailee Steinfeld’s committed performance as Nadine, a troubled high-school junior in Oregon, and Woody Harrelson’s deft turn, as a teacher who helps her, make this thin and cliché-riddled comic drama worth watching. Read full review
