Doctor Strange is officially set to join The Avengers and we’ve got the details! It looks like The Avengers will be getting a magical touch to take on Thanos. We still have over a month before Benedict Cumberbatch officially joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of Doctor Strange in theaters, but it looks like we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of him in the near future.
During filming on next year’s Thor: Ragnarok, a photo showing Chris Hemsworth’s “Thor” looking at a card with a familiar address on it hinted that we could see Doctor Strange appear in that film and now thanks to a new interview we can add 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War to his list of films.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Cumberbatch explained that it’s a logistical challenge trying to align his schedule with those of Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany for the third Avengers movie saying quote, “To get us all together will be quite something.
That’s why this character is being introduced, to open up the next chapter.” While Cumberbatch’s inclusion in Infinity War shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, it’s nice to get a confirmation, especially considering at one point he wasn’t even going to be “Doctor Strange”.
As part of Empire Magazine’s recent Doctor Strange cover story, director Scott Derrickson revealed that Cumberbatch originally turned down the role due to a scheduling conflict. The actor had already agreed to play Hamlet in London around the same time that the film was set to shoot in order to make its summer 2016 release date.
Derrickson and the studio then began looking at other actors like Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto and Ryan Gosling, but Derrickson went to Marvel’s Kevin Feige and said that it had to be Benedict. The studio decided to push the film’s production and release date in order to accommodate Cumberbatch’s schedule to which Benedict says was the biggest compliment they could pay him and also quote, “…motivated me to try to fulfil their faith in me.”
We’ll all get to see how Benedict Cumberbatch’s “Sorcerer Supreme” is when Doctor Strange arrives in theaters on November 4th, but for now, what do you think of him joining the ranks of The Avengers for Infinity War?
